The National Employment Savings Trust is being introduced by the government to try and ensure that everyone has some form of pension saving arrangement in place.
From the spring of 2011 a phased implementation will commence. Many small employers will be affected from October 2012 onwards. All employees will have to be brought into the scheme at its commencement, but employees can, at present, decide to opt out if they wish. A compulsory re-commencement in the scheme every 3 years has to be carried out by the employer, although the employee can (at present) decide to opt out each time.
Employees will be expected to contribute 4% of their qualifying pensionable pay, employers will have to contribute a minimum of 3% of qualifying pensionable pay and HMR&C will contribute 1% to make a minimum 8% overall contribution.
Both employees and employers can decide to contribute more if they wish, upto a maximum of £3,600 per annum per employee.
